Workshop

Pinhole
Martha Casanave & Chris Patton, Instructors
Saturday and Sunday September 12-13, 2009

Pinhole cameras belong to a magical world of slowness, simplicity and surprise--a world in which creativity, imagination and the unexpected replace fast-paced, expensive and complex technologies. Pinhole cameras have no lenses, shutters, or viewfinders, and are an ideal medium for expressing memories, fantasies and dreams.

Materials will be provided to turn Holga cameras (included with course) into “Pinholgas” and to make pinhole cameras out of ordinary empty paint cans (also included).

The instructors will demonstrate and share their own pinhole work, and cameras. A brief history as well as a simple explanation of how it all works will be presented. This mind-expanding class is especially appropriate for beginners and great for advanced photographers wishing to break out of a rut. All participants will leave with the skill to do pinhole techniques on their own.

The private location for this workshop will provide participants with exclusive access to a section of the beautiful shoreline near the Monterey Aquarium. The darkroom facilities on campus will be used to develop the paint can images for immediate feedback. There is private parking and a wide choice of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, as well as picnic tables overlooking the ocean for bag lunches.

Work chosen by each student will be posted on a class website within days of the workshop.

At Hopkins Marine Station, Pacific Grove, CA.
