PhotoFocus 2011
Funded by the Arts Council of Monterey and the Pebble Beach Company
Foundation, the Center for Photographic Art's 2012 PhotoFocus programs involved
eighteen students from a variety of Monterey Peninsula and Salinas area high schools.
Over three Saturdays this past July, the students learned photographic skills, including
portraiture, table-top lighting, digital pinhole techniques, studio and outdoor lighting, and digital
editing. The groups visited the Weston Gallery in Carmel, Patrick Tregenza's photography studio in
Monterey and Cook's Camera in Salinas, as well as the Edward Weston retrospective at the
Monterey Museum of Art - La Mirada. Coaching on digital editing was provided by several local fine
art photographers. On location photo sessions were held at Mission San Juan Batista and the Carmel Mission.
As a special highlight this year, Pentax Corporation donated fifteen point-and-shoot
digital cameras to support the Salinas program. Congratulations for acquiring the donation goes
to Tracy Valleau, coordinator of the Salinas PhotoFocus program.
The PhotoFocus program was an inspirational stepping stone for the students, who
returned home with new photographic ideas and techniques. Please enjoy the selection
of images that the students helped to edit for publication.
Kudos to Terry Shoulders and Tracy Valleau for coordinating this year's programs,
and to the following volunteers for sharing their time and knowledge with the students:
Nola Barnick, Richard Cannon, Marty Springer and Glenn Steiner.
