Saelon Renkes has a broad range of photographic interests, but she especially delights in seeking out expressions of extraordinary beauty in completely real-world places and bodies. She prefers to work with non-professional models in a collaborative fashion, to find and isolate the physical manifestations of those moods, emotions and gestures that all humanity shares.
Saelon worked in the darkroom for many years, and handpainted most of her photographs even while doing digital work on the side, but a few years ago she made the switch “over to the dark side”, to creating digital prints exclusively. “Lana Mirrored” is an archival print made with pigmented inks on fine art paper, printed by the artist from a scan of her handpainted original.
Saelon Renkes’ photographs have been widely exhibited in galleries and museums, have won a number of awards, and have been included in
numerous publications. Saelon has also maintained a studio on the web at http://saelon.com since 1994.
Originally trained as a biologist/naturalist, her photographic education consists of equal parts of community college classes, advanced
workshops, and self-directed learning.
