About The Work

I have had a long and rewarding relationship with Yosemite, and find continued inspiration there. I am especially drawn to interesting times of year like Fall and Winter. One January morning, the sun had just risen over the canyon rim, backlighting these oak trees for the first time that day, resulting in a brief display of steam from these wet trees. What really drew me to photograph this, though, was the amazing light. I search for that special kind of light that can help transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Light is what excites me most, and drives me to photograph. As Wynn Bullock said, "Light to me is perhaps the most profound truth in the universe."

About Charles Cramer

After spending seven years of college studying classical piano, Charles Cramer visited Yosemite National Park, and soon realized he wanted out of those tiny practice rooms. Realizing the similarities between interpreting music and interpreting a negative, he soon became enamored with making prints. Thirty years later, he is recognized as a master printmaker in both darkroom-based dye transfer printing, and now in digital processes. Cramer was selected by the National Park Service to be an artist-in-residence in Yosemite in 1987 and again in 2009. Cramer teaches for the Ansel Adams Gallery Workshops, John Sexton Workshops, and others. He also sells prints through many fine galleries, and in 2010 had a solo exhibition at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel.
