About The Work

In many ways, the subjects we select to photograph reflect the way we choose to savor life. We learn about ourselves through the camera lens. I tend to hone in on the hidden fragments and architectural details which often take on abstract forms: peeling and pock-marked walls; dark, dank alleys, a breeze wafting through a tattered lace curtain; a staircase meandering upward. The secrets I seek seem to be nestled behind crusty hinges, molding balustrades and beneath cobbled stone streets. I am searching for stillness and abstractions drawn from slices of life.

About Peggy Downes Baskin

After graduating from Carmel schools, Peggy Downes Baskin attended Vassar on a full four year scholarship, receiving Phi Beta Kappa honors in her junior year. In 1983 she received a PhD in politics and taught government courses for over thirty years at Santa Clara University, University of California Santa Cruz, University of California San Francisco and the University of Durham, England. Intrigued by photography, she took it seriously in her sixties, publishing two photo journals: The Quiet Eye (2009) and The Wandering Spirit (2011). She has donated over 4,500 copies of these volumes to benefit cultural/non-profit institutions nationwide. Her work has been exhibited at the University of California Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey Conference Center, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History and the Pacific Grove Art Center.
