Pinhole cameras and photograms belong to the world of slowness, simplicity, and surprise. They are a wonderful step away from fast paced technology. Cyanotype photograms are images made, without a camera, by placing objects on a hand coated UV light-sensitive paper resulting in rich blue prints. Participants can easily continue making cyanotypes at home as a darkroom is not necessary.
The instructors will demonstrate and share their own pinhole work, cameras, and cyanotype imagery. A brief history of each as well as a simple explanation of how it all works will be presented during the workshop. Materials will be provided to turn Holga cameras (120 roll film format) into “Pinholas.” Chemistry and paper will be provided for making cyanotypes during the workshop.
The class will be held at Hopkins Marine Station Pacific Grove, CA. The private location for this workshop provides participants with access to a section of shoreline near the Monterey Aquarium during the pinhole portion of the class. There is private parking and a wide choice of restaurants nearby. There are picnic tables overlooking the ocean for bag lunches.
