Looking through the CPA archive of snapshots, we came upon many taken at events in the early days of our nonprofit. We thought you would enjoy seeing some of them.

The Center for Photographic Art (CPA) is currently accepting applications for our volunteer Gallery Docent Program. Gallery Docents are an essential component of our exhibition program.
As a docent you will serve as the initial contact with our gallery visitors, greet guests, and answer questions about the exhibitions, artists and other CPA programs. Gallery Docents reap many rewards including opportunities not available to the general CPA membership such as one-on-one contact with the artists, field trips, and other educational experiences.
CPA seeks enthusiastic individuals who delight in public interaction—everything from communication and education to general assistance. CPA staff and Board members will provide you with the tools and training to accomplish these vital services. Expertise in photography is a plus but not a requirement.
Our training program consists of a single evening class where you will learn the roles and responsibilities of the docent position. You will then be asked to complete two mentored shifts in the gallery. Afterwards, you will be added to the monthly gallery schedule. Shifts are Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. You may choose days that fit into your schedule. We ask for a minimum of one weekday and one weekend shift per month.
Once you submit an application, one of our staff members will contact you to answer any questions you might have about the docent program before enrolling you in the training class.
CPA will be accepting applications through the end of March 2013. Applications can be found at: http://www.photography.org/get_involved/volunteer.php.
We look forward to having you represent us in the gallery!

From time to time the Center for Photographic Art will spotlight images taken at its events over the past 25 years. This first “Flash Back” features candid shots of German-born American photographer Ruth Bernhard (1905-2006). Internationally renowned for her images of the nude figure, Bernhard was an avid supporter of CPA and visited often. In 1996 CPA curated a retrospective exhibition of Bernhard prints in conjunction with the release of Gift of the Commonplace, co-produced by Woodrose Publishing. Although CPA no longer has copies available for sale, Gift of the Commonplace can still be purchased through Internet sites such as amazon and alibris.
